Transition threshold for the 3-D Couette flow

Abstract:
Beginning with Reynolds's famous paper in 1883, the stability and transition to turbulence of the laminar flows at high Reynolds number has been an important and active field in the fluid mechanics. For some simple flows such as Couette flow which are linearly stable for any Reynolds number, however, it could be unstable and transition to turbulence for small perturbations at high Reynolds number. One explanation suggested by Kelvin is that the flow may be stable, but the stability threshold is decreasing as Reynolds number tends to the infinity. Many works in Physics and applied mathematics are devoted to finding the transition threshold. We (jointed with Dongyi Wei) proved the transition threshold conjecture in physical literature for the 3-D Couette flow.
