Abstract: We review various notions of heights over number fields, including heights of algebraic numbers, Weil’s height machine for algebraic varieties over number fields, Néron-Tate heights for curves over number fields, in which the last has a famous manifestation in number theory — the Gross-Zagier formula. We then introduce Beilinson’s notion of height pairings of cycles of general dimensions, Nekovář’s p-adic height pairing, together with their application to L-derivatives for GL(n). We also propose some interesting questions at the end.
