Abstract: Flocking and synchronization exemplify quintessential collective behaviors in nature—manifested in phenomena like bird formations and firefly flashing. In multi-particle systems, time delays (both transmission and processing) are inescapable. This talk explores how such delays influence the emergence of flocking and synchronization, respectively. We first survey results on the renowned CS model, where both transmission delays (information propagation lags) and processing delays (signal interpretation lags) have been shown to affect flock coherence. We then present our recent work on the CS model under hierarchical leadership structures, demonstrating how delay tolerance shifts with leadership dynamics. Finally, for the Kuramoto model for synchronization, we analyze the equivalence between finite collisions (phase crossings) and phase locking in the presence of processing delay. A key contribution of our research is the derivation of tight upper bounds for permissible time delays, establishing clear thresholds for maintaining collective coherence.
