Title: Stability and instability of small BGK waves

Abstract: BGK waves, discovered in 1957 by Bernstein, Greene and Kruskal, are particular solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system in one space dimension which are traveling waves, namely which translate in space with a constant velocity. The question of their linear stability is completely open, even in physics, except in the very particular case where the distribution function is constant in a neighbourhood of 0 (Guo and Lin, CMP, 2017). In this talk, I will introduce a a very simple criterium which is equivalent to the linear stability of general, smooth, small amplitude BGK waves. I will also describe the long-time behavior of solutions of the linearized Vlasov-Poisson system in the stable case. This is a joint work with E. Grenier, W. Huang and B. Pausader.
